Blogging And Advertising, Do They Mix?
Advertising is great for all concerned, it lets people know about new products and services, it gives information, and it makes you money, good. But too much advertising can be a very bad thing and it often breeds discontentment and greed, neither of which is very pretty. Used the wrong way, the advertising on your blog could lose you a lot of visitors, not exactly what you want. So you have to incorporate adverts in your blogging and get it just right.
The best indication that a blog is a success, is if you are getting the traffic you want, you make some money with just a bit of effort, and your advertisers are happy. But don’t get carried away by your success. You might have the idea that that placing more adverts on a blog will boost earnings exponentially. What will happen is that you will join the advertiser’s black list. They have guidelines on the number of ads you can place on a web page. This number depends on the sponsor, but it is normally between 3 and 5.
If you do not want to lose any good will between you and your affiliate or the advertising program you use, read and understand their policies and abide by them. If you don’t, your blog could be classified a splog, and that is one of the worst things that could happen. Splog is the term for a blog that contains spam. So if the blog is no more than page after page of advertising, and has very little content, then rethink your strategy.
Too many ads on your blog can bury your content, distract your visitors, and even frustrate them. Some, such as the very wary ones, will leave the blog in a hurry. If the blog resembles an infomercial, forget it. It will look annoying and take away from the good reputation you’re trying to build.
The main problem with blogs that have too many advertising units is that they can confuse visitors. If they are confused, they’re unlikely to click on any adverts, much less subscribe or buy anything. That leaves both you and your advertisers empty-handed.
A page will handle three adverts comfortably, which is usually acceptable to advertising and affiliate programs. And if you manage to place these adverts well then they will catch the eye of your visitors. Because there are fewer ads to look at, visitors will be able to select which they want to click on.
Before you start redesigning your pages consider the sort of programs that you are going to be running. If you plan to be a brand affiliate there are certain restrictions you will have to adhere to. Some companies prefer not to have adverts for a competing brand placed on the same blog.
Placement and aesthetics matter. Consider some of the highest-rated blogs and study their ad placements. Where are these ads placed on a page, what are their sizes relative to one another, and to the content box, and what do these ads contain? If you have seen enough of these successful blogs, you will have picked up enough lessons to know how to use blog advertising to your advantage.
